Starting Thursday, Deutsche Bahn has banned alcohol consumption at approximately 5,700 railway stations across Germany, in an effort to improve safety and cleanliness at the stations. The measure expands a rule already in effect at several major stations across the country.
The railway operator says the ban has reduced conflicts, litter and the discomfort experienced by passengers and employees. The decision comes as railway stations in several German cities have become places frequented by homeless people, individuals with addictions or people consuming alcohol in public spaces.
According to a recent survey commissioned by Deutsche Bahn and conducted on a representative sample of 3,200 people, nearly 80% of respondents support the ban, while 9% oppose it.
Security staff will warn those who violate the rule. In cases of repeated violations, Deutsche Bahn may permanently ban them from its buildings. Consumption remains permitted in restaurants and other establishments at the stations, while passengers may carry sealed alcoholic beverages in their luggage. Alcohol may also continue to be consumed on board trains.
