The Government has approved extending by six months the agreement between Romania and the Republic of Moldova on coordinated control at the Albița-Leușeni Border Crossing Point, for traffic entering Romania. The measure will apply from October 15, 2026, to April 15, 2027, and aims to reduce waiting times and improve cross-border traffic flow.
Under coordinated control, the border authorities of the two countries cooperate to carry out the necessary formalities for people and vehicles. The agreement was signed in 2023 and has been successively extended following joint evaluations conducted by the institutions responsible.
Between July 1 and August 31, 2026, approximately 650,000 people and 185,000 vehicles crossed through the border crossing point. To manage heavy traffic, the authorities increased the number of control lanes and implemented joint monitoring and traffic-flow measures.
The September assessment indicated effective cooperation between the Romanian and Moldovan authorities, but also highlighted infrastructure issues and challenges in managing peak periods. The Government maintains that extending the agreement will enable the continuation of joint measures for smoother and safer traffic.
