Before the announcement regarding the new interinstitutional working group, the Government approved a six-month extension of the Romania–Republic of Moldova agreement on coordinated control at the Albița–Leușeni Border Crossing Point, in the direction of entry into Romania, for the period October 15, 2026–April 15, 2027. During that period, the stated objective was to reduce waiting times and streamline cross-border traffic by having the authorities cooperate in carrying out formalities for people and vehicles.
Also, prior to this, the agreement concerning coordinated control at the Galați–Giurgiulești crossing point was extended by 12 months, for the period August 24, 2026–August 24, 2027. The authorities justified maintaining the mechanism by assessing the results of the control and by the fact that the agreement facilitates the continuation of infrastructure investments funded by the EU, alongside the subsequent implementation of bidirectional control and alignment with European standards in border management.
