The third contingent of Romanian firefighters, specialized in forest fire extinguishing, left on Sunday for Greece to continue monitoring and extinguishing vegetation fires.
The deployment is being carried out overland, from the Special Intervention Unit in Emergency Situations in Ciolpani, on a route that includes cities such as Giurgiu, Ruse, Sofia, and Thessaloniki, arriving in Nea Makri, located about 25 km from Athens.
The contingent will use the intervention equipment previously deployed by IGSU, including fire-fighting vehicles of various capacities.
The actions of the Romanian firefighters are part of a pre-positioning program organized by the General Directorate for European Civil Protection and funded by the European Union, aimed at supporting communities affected by devastating fires. Romania has been collaborating with other countries, such as the Czech Republic, France, and Moldova, in these missions since 2022.
