More than 120 firefighters, pilots, and forestry employees continued on Wednesday, September 30, efforts to contain the fire in Domogled–Valea Cernei National Park, particularly in areas near the town of Băile Herculane. Two Black Hawk helicopters belonging to the General Aviation Inspectorate, equipped with Bambi Bucket systems, are taking part in the operations.
The most extensive fire hotspots are upstream from Cociului Waterfall, where authorities are trying to bring in additional forces and identify access routes for emergency vehicles. The rocky terrain, steep slopes, and significant elevation differences are making the intervention more difficult, and in some areas firefighters have to reach the sites on foot over long distances.
In the Băile Olănești area, the fire is spreading through multiple hotspots. More than 50 firefighters, together with forestry workers, mountain rescuers, and volunteers, are taking part in the operation. Two C-27J Spartan aircraft belonging to the Romanian Air Force operated on Tuesday and will continue firefighting missions. Reconnaissance efforts are supported by a drone equipped with a thermal-imaging camera.
Traffic on DN 67D in the Băile Herculane area was closed on Monday after the fire approached the road. Authorities warn that dry vegetation can catch fire and spread rapidly in the absence of precipitation.
