The mission of the Romanian firefighters sent to Greece to support the Greek authorities in combating wildfires ended on Wednesday, September 15, 2026. The final team set off for Romania after more than a month of activity carried out in the town of Nea Makri, near Athens, according to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU).

Between August 1 and September 15, 120 Romanian firefighters, organized into three teams, took part in the mission through a specialized forest firefighting module. The crews were prepared to intervene alongside Greek firefighters in areas affected or threatened by fires.

During the operation, the Romanian firefighters carried out monitoring and intervention activities to contain and extinguish fires that broke out across Greece, in sectors designated by the local authorities. IGSU stated that each participant fulfilled their mission with “responsibility” and “professionalism,” far from their families.

The mission was carried out as part of the European pre-positioning program organized by the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations. The program, funded by the European Union, supports communities affected by the devastating fires of previous years. This year, Greece hosted crews from Romania, the Czech Republic, France, and the Republic of Moldova. IGSU thanked both the Romanian firefighters and their Greek colleagues for their cooperation.
