Iceland rejected, through a referendum, the resumption of negotiations for joining the European Union. The "No" camp received 52.5% of the votes, while "Yes" was supported by 47.2% of voters.
The votes were counted overnight, and the result was confirmed by the local television station RUV.
This is the highest voter turnout recorded in Iceland in recent elections, after the parliamentary election in April 2009, when participation was 85.1%, according to RUV.
Iceland applied for EU membership for the first time after the financial crisis in 2009, but negotiations were suspended in 2013.
