The government adopted on Tuesday an emergency ordinance regarding the reform of the administration, which introduces strict measures for drivers who do not pay traffic fines. According to the Minister of Development, Cseke Attila, the driving license will be automatically suspended after 105 days of non-payment of the fine, and this measure will become applicable from September 1, 2026. The ordinance provides for two distinct procedures. The first allows for the reduction of the suspension period of the license, but the driver will have to prove the payment of traffic fines. The second procedure refers to the automatic suspension of the license, which will be carried out through digital interconnection between local authorities and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI). Before suspension, drivers will receive a payment notice. Cseke Attila emphasized that drivers will not have to physically surrender their license, and the right to drive will be automatically restored after the fine is paid. Additionally, the final form of the ordinance no longer includes the increase of unpaid fines by 60%.
