Drivers with unpaid fines risk having their driving license suspended from August 2026.

The government approved, on July 9, regulations that establish that drivers with unpaid traffic fines will lose their right to drive.

The measure will come into effect on August 25, 2026, and will apply to all vehicle drivers, agricultural tractor drivers, or tram drivers. The suspension of the right to drive will be calculated at one day for every 50 lei unpaid, and drivers will have 90 days to pay the fine. If they do not pay it, the local tax authority will determine the suspension period.

For example, a fine of 500 lei will result in 10 days of suspension. The suspension will begin at 00:00 on the third working day after the payment deadline expires. Authorities will send a payment notice, and in case of contesting the fine, the 90-day period will be suspended. Partial payment will reduce the number of suspension days, and the fine can also be paid after the suspension has begun.

The measure aims to ensure compliance with traffic legislation and provide a more effective penalty system.
