According to the data from the National Bank of Romania (BNR), Romania's total external debt increased by 1.5 billion euros in the period of January-February 2026, reaching 229.963 billion euros. Long-term debt accounted for 79.4% of the total, with a level of 182.519 billion euros, an increase of 1.2% compared to the end of 2025. In contrast, short-term debt decreased by 1.5%, reaching 47.444 billion euros. During the same period, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of 3.191 billion euros, lower compared to 3.638 billion euros in 2025.
Direct investments from non-residents increased to 1.128 billion euros, and the long-term external debt service ratio decreased to 12.9%. The coverage ratio of goods and services imports was 6.7 months, and the coverage of short-term external debt with foreign exchange reserves increased to 107.3%.
