The Chairwoman of the Senate's Defense, Public Order and National Security Committee, Nicoleta Pauliuc, stated on March 19 in Bucharest that Romania does not have a law to protect critical infrastructure in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ). This statement was made during the event 'National Security Barometer', where Pauliuc promised to focus on this aspect in the upcoming period.
The critical infrastructure in the EEZ includes submarine telecommunications cables, underwater pipelines, and offshore drilling equipment. International law allows the EEZ to extend up to 200 nautical miles, and the lack of adequate regulation raises security issues, especially in the context of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Oana Ijdelea, a lawyer specialized in energy, addressed these challenges at the request of NewMoney, emphasizing the importance of effective regulation for the protection of energy resources in the Black Sea.
