In 2026, the electronic identity card in Romania will undergo significant changes, as it will be included in an electronic wallet. Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu announced that the new document will centralize essential documents, such as the health card and diplomas. So far, over 1.2 million Romanians have received the electronic identity card, which includes an electronic signature and is issued free of charge. However, its implementation faces difficulties due to the lack of necessary equipment in institutions. Additionally, the government cloud, which will become operational in the summer of 2026, will facilitate data exchange between institutions and will support the use of the electronic wallet. The project is funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, aiming to issue at least three million electronic identity cards by 2026.
