The new rules for issuing identity cards, starting from August

The authorities announce that the old identity card, the classic model from 1997, will only be issued in special and justified cases. Applications for these cards will be restricted by the civil registration services.

Citizens whose ID has expired this month will be prioritized for the new electronic ID, which is smaller than the classic one, having the size of a bank card.

The chip version is free, being funded from European funds, while the chipless version costs 39 lei. The electronic ID contains information about the citizen, including their residence, but not all institutions have installed readers for the new IDs. The classic IDs already in circulation remain valid until their expiration date.
