The electronic identity card will be able to replace the health card starting from September 1, 2026

Starting from September 1, 2026, the electronic identity card (CEI) will be able to replace the functions of the health card, according to the authorities. This will not cancel the use of existing health cards, which can still be used. The two documents will be able to be used in parallel for a period.

CEI will store the necessary medical data, but not all authorities will have access to this information.

The President of the National Health Insurance House, Horațiu-Remus Moldovan, emphasized that patients will be able to use CEI for authentication in the health system. The transition to the new system will require the adaptation of medical infrastructure, including applications and equipment in offices, hospitals, and pharmacies.
