The electronic identity card is operational in Romania, but Romanians abroad cannot request it through embassies and consulates. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has completed the technical assignments, and the operationalization falls to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The electronic identity card has been available in Romania since March 20, 2025, and the extension of issuance was completed on July 15, 2025.

However, Romanians abroad cannot request this document through embassies or consular offices, as the operationalization of the service in the consular network falls under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE). The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) has confirmed that it has fulfilled its technical and legislative responsibilities, remaining available for the necessary support in the operationalization process.

Functional tests for processing applications were completed on April 3, 2026, but Romanians in the diaspora must wait until the service becomes effectively available in consulates. MAI emphasizes that the process must take place under conditions of safety and legality, to ensure access to the same type of document for all Romanian citizens.
