The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) officially launched ROWallet, the first digital identity wallet in Romania, available on iPhone and Android.
This will allow users to store official documents, such as identity cards and driving licenses, on their phones, providing greater control over personal data. ROWallet will function as a digital wallet, where users can add documents after an initial identity verification.
The application will allow selective sharing of information, reducing the need to disclose complete data. Among the benefits of ROWallet are control over data, reduced bureaucracy, enhanced security through authentication methods, and European interoperability. Although the application is not yet available, testing will begin on October 31, 2026, and the official launch is scheduled for January 14, 2027.
User data protection is a priority, and the application will allow the wallet to be deactivated in case of loss or theft. ROWallet offers an optional digital alternative to traditional documents, having the potential to transform citizens' interactions with institutions.
