Călin Georgescu will remain in pre-trial detention after the Bucharest Court of Appeal admitted DIICOT’s appeal and definitively rejected the request to replace the measure with house arrest. The decision was issued after the Bucharest Tribunal had previously approved the request on October 13.
The former presidential candidate stated, in a message posted on Facebook, that he remains in the Central Detention Center and appealed to magistrates who listen to their conscience and put the law above everything else. He announced that the Bucharest Tribunal will examine on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., the Prosecutor’s Office’s proposal to extend his pre-trial detention by another 30 days.
The Court of Appeal’s ruling was issued after a panel to resolve a disagreement was constituted, following differing opinions from the first two judges. During the hearing, approximately 500 of Georgescu’s supporters blocked traffic on Splaiul Independenței.
Georgescu has been in pre-trial detention since September 29, in a case in which he is accused of fraud. According to investigators, a businessman allegedly lost 1.1 million euros in a scheme related to obtaining a loan for transactions involving precious metals. The allegations are to be examined as part of the judicial proceedings.
