The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) announced that it will provide financial compensation to the 116 Russian athletes who were unable to participate in this year's Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, according to Reuters. The ban imposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, although some athletes were accepted as neutral competitors, without a national flag or anthem. The Russian Minister of Sports and president of the ROC, Mikhail Degtyarev, announced the decision to grant compensation during a meeting with athletes who competed in the Olympics.
He emphasized that the Ministry of Sports and the ROC are working to ensure the return of the Russian national team to international competitions under the national flag. Degtyarev mentioned that, in the event that negotiations fail, the rights of the athletes will be defended in court. Nikita Filippov was the only Russian athlete to win a medal at the Winter Olympics, obtaining silver in alpine skiing.
