The Ialomița County Committee for Emergency Situations extended by 30 days the state of alert imposed in the municipality of Slobozia and the communes of Scânteia, Ciulnița, Cosâmbești and Mărculești, amid problems caused by the suspension of Urban SA’s environmental permit. The measure, adopted on Wednesday, takes effect on September 8.
Throughout the state of alert, Urban SA must continue to ensure the supply of drinking water, sewerage services and wastewater treatment in the communities it serves. The operator is required to implement the Emergency Breakdown and Compliance Plan, which provides for technical works to reduce pollution loads and bring the treatment process within legal parameters.
The environmental permit was suspended in August after several measures established following inspections were not fully implemented. The Slobozia Local Council must also implement an intervention plan to improve services.
Authorities say keeping the operator operational is necessary to protect public health and prevent the uncontrolled discharge of wastewater.
