The state of alert in the commune of Praid, Harghita County, has been extended by another 30 days, from November 6 to December 5, 2026, inclusive. The decision was announced on Wednesday by Prefect Petres Sándor and is necessary because the works to secure the affected area have not yet been carried out.
The authorities continue to monitor developments in the area of the old mines, where there is a risk of collapses. The danger of a flash flood affecting the households that were initially evacuated is considered lower, but the area remains unstable, and technical monitoring must be maintained.
The prefect explained that, in the absence of a flood retention basin and a diversion of the watercourses, the authorities must be prepared for possible evacuations. A flash flood could move the salty, saturated water, causing further erosion problems and salt pollution of the stream and the local hydrographic system.
The state of alert is extended monthly by the Local Committee for Emergency Situations. The prefect nevertheless emphasized that the measure does not mean that the entire community, the commune, or the tourist attractions in Praid are in danger. He described as mistaken the perception that the locality is unsafe for visitors.
