The Praid Local Committee for Emergency Situations has extended by another month the state of alert declared in the Harghita commune after the salt mine was flooded in 2025. The measure applies from October 7 through November 5, inclusive, amid risks in the mining area and the need to continue work to keep it safe.
Authorities have ordered the mobilization of all necessary forces, equipment and resources. Public access to the affected area and the Salt Canyon remains prohibited. If the situation requires it, people and households located downstream will receive support.
The development of the situation is being monitored by the Mureș Basin Water Administration, SALROM – Praid Salt Mine, the Praid Local Committee for Emergency Situations and the “Oltul” Harghita Inspectorate for Emergency Situations. The mining area, the flow rates of the Corund stream and the Târnava Mică River, as well as water quality, are being monitored.
The state of alert was declared at the beginning of May 2025 after seepage appeared underground. At the end of the same month, the salt mine was flooded by water from the Corund stream, and the measure was extended monthly.
