The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova has decided to denounce the agreement signed with Russia in 1998 for the establishment of cultural centers, arguing that it can be used as a tool for disinformation in the current geopolitical context. The Ministry of Culture has drafted the denunciation project, emphasizing that, although Russia has a cultural center in Chișinău, Moldova does not benefit from a similar center in Russia, which undermines the original purpose of the agreement.
The Russian Cultural Center, opened in 2009, is managed by the Embassy of Russia and is considered by the European Union as a vehicle for the Kremlin's hybrid influence. The opposition, especially the Socialist Party, has criticized the initiative, deeming it dangerous and unnecessary, and has called for avoiding escalation of social tensions. The project was voted in the first reading by 60 deputies and is set to be subjected to a final vote.
