The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova voted to close the Russian Cultural Center in Chișinău, as part of efforts to reduce Moscow's influence in the country. The vote took place after the Russian ambassador was summoned to the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following illegal intrusions by Russian drones. The project was supported by 57 out of 101 deputies, the majority being from the pro-European party Action and Solidarity (PAS).
The Ministry of Culture argued that the center could promote threatening discourses against national security. Although the center will remain open until July 2026 for legal reasons, the government considers its activities to be suspicious. Additionally, Parliament has initiated the procedure to denounce three agreements with the member states of the CIS, as part of aligning national legislation with European Union standards. This decision will affect the travel of citizens from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, who will need a visa to enter Moldova.
