On Wednesday, the European Commission adopted a package of measures aimed at facilitating the efficient circulation of energy in all member states, integrating clean energy and accelerating electrification. These measures aim to reduce energy prices and ensure an affordable living for Europeans, in the context of Europe reducing its dependence on energy imports from Russia. The Commission also proposes additional funding methods to adapt energy infrastructure to future requirements, emphasizing the importance of a fair sharing of costs.
Among the important initiatives are the establishment of eight energy highways, for which the Commission commits to accelerate implementation through political coordination and collaboration with regional groups. Although progress has been made, the European Union has not reached the necessary level of interconnectivity, and the lack of action exposes member states to price volatility and geopolitical risks. In 2024, electricity prices in the EU were significantly higher compared to those in China and the USA, highlighting the urgent need for reforms in the energy sector.
