Six people were detained in the Republic of Moldova and placed in pretrial detention after being accused of forming an organized criminal group specializing in robberies. According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, the suspects allegedly targeted traders they knew possessed substantial sums of money and lured them outside populated areas under the pretext of commercial transactions.
One of the attacks allegedly took place on July 3, 2026, near the village of Cheltuitori, in Chișinău municipality. The victim was allegedly called to a meeting to purchase trucks loaded with sour cherries and then taken to a wooded area. Five of the suspects, wearing masks and gloves, allegedly assaulted the victim, attempted to strangle them, and tied their hands and feet.
The attackers allegedly demanded that the victim transfer 900,000 lei, threatening them with death. After the victim said they did not have the money, the suspects allegedly stole foreign currency, lei, and other belongings from the vehicle.
Prosecutors claim that the group had also prepared an attack in the locality of Mereni, but the intended victim did not show up. On July 6, police allegedly detained the six suspects while they were awaiting instructions for another strike. One of them was allegedly supposed to ensure the group’s escape in a car. An alleged organizer has not yet been identified. If convicted, the suspects face up to 12 years in prison.
