Two citizens of the Republic of Moldova detained for facilitating the illegal border crossing of two Ukrainians

Two citizens of the Republic of Moldova were detained on Thursday, September 24, on suspicion of organizing the illegal crossing of the state border for two people from Ukraine. The case is being investigated by the Border Police and prosecutors as part of a criminal case concerning the organization of illegal migration by an organized criminal group or criminal organization.

According to preliminary information, the suspects allegedly requested $5,000 per person in exchange for facilitating the illegal border crossing.

Following special investigative measures, the two Moldovan citizens were detained for 72 hours. Subsequently, at the prosecutor’s request, the court ordered the pretrial detention of both suspects for 30 days.

If found guilty, they face between 5 and 12 years in prison, a fine of 6,000 to 8,000 conventional units, and a ban on holding certain positions or carrying out certain activities for up to five years.

The investigation is continuing to establish all the circumstances and identify other people involved. The Border Police emphasizes that the suspects benefit from the presumption of innocence until a final court ruling is issued.
