Lithuania is calling for the acceleration of Ukraine’s accession process to the European Union, with Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys warning that delays affect the security of the entire continent. The statement was made after Kyiv adopted a measure considered essential for unblocking the negotiations.
“No more artificial delays!” Budrys said. The Lithuanian minister maintains that Ukraine has fulfilled its obligations even under wartime conditions and that European states no longer have any reason to postpone the stages of the integration process.
The Ukrainian Parliament adopted a law guaranteeing national minorities the right to study in their mother tongue. The measure addresses one of the main demands put forward by Hungary, which has so far opposed advancing the negotiations because of the situation of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
The law was swiftly signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Subsequently, the member states of the European Union reached a unanimous agreement for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to take the next concrete step at a conference scheduled in Luxembourg.
The decision does not represent the immediate accession of the two countries to the European Union, but rather the official continuation of the integration procedure. Lithuania is nevertheless calling for negotiations with Ukraine to move forward without new political blockages or delays.
