Former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase points out that Ukraine has had previous security guarantees and recent talks do not clarify the country's territorial future vis-à-vis Russia.

Nastase recalls that Ukraine has received security guarantees from Russia in the past, stressing that the key issue now is the territorial question, which has not been addressed in Washington. Although security guarantees similar to NATO's Article 5 have been discussed, it is not clear whether they will include Ukraine within its recognized borders since 1991 or a smaller variant. Nastase suggests that Zelensky may be under pressure to cede territory to Putin, given that European leaders may not attend the talks. He also warns that Ukraine could end up losing even more from the conflict, which has already had devastating consequences.
