Designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan delivered a speech in Parliament about Romania’s transformation following its rapprochement with Europe and accession to NATO and the European Union. He compared the country’s current situation with the communist period, the difficult transition after 1990, and the years when Romania was internationally isolated.
Mureșan stated that, before European integration, Romanians “were alone, poor, and isolated,” while membership in the European Union brought the freedom to live, work, and study in other member states. He also emphasized the importance of European rules, values, and laws, which, he said, give citizens more power.
In his speech, the designated prime minister recalled the moments he considers decisive for Romania’s European direction: the 1989 Revolution, accession to the European Union in 2007, and the 2017 protests for justice and the rule of law.
