Marcel Ciolacu, former PSD prime minister, accused that the economic data for 2024 was altered by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) to transform economic growth into recession, in order to obscure the economic disaster of the current prime minister, Ilie Bolojan's term. According to INS, Romania entered technical recession in 2024, with a decrease of 0.4% in the first two quarters, contrary to initial data indicating growth. Ciolacu denounced this revision as a "blatant manipulation" and emphasized that the current government is trying to hide its economic failures.
Bolojan, for his part, acknowledged the recession but argued that it is part of a necessary transition process for a stronger economy. He explained that spending in 2024 was more focused on current consumption than on economic development, which led to imbalances. In conclusion, Ciolacu and Bolojan are throwing mutual accusations at each other, each trying to defend their term and explain the economic situation of Romania.
