Mircea Abrudean welcomes Siegfried Mureșan’s designation as prime minister by Nicușor Dan

Senate President Mircea Abrudean welcomed on Thursday the nomination of PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan for the position of prime minister by President Nicușor Dan. Mureșan accepted the nomination and publicly confirmed the decision after consultations at Cotroceni Palace with the parliamentary parties.

Abrudean said that Romania “urgently needs” a government with full powers, given that the political crisis has lasted for more than four months. He emphasized Siegfried Mureșan’s experience at the European level and the roles he holds as vice president of the European People’s Party and of the EPP Group in the European Parliament.

The Senate president also mentioned Mureșan’s involvement in negotiations on the European Union’s future multiannual budget, estimated at nearly 2,000 billion euros. According to Abrudean, the experience gained in Brussels must be used in Romania’s interest.

Siegfried Mureșan had been proposed as prime minister by PNL, USR, and UDMR as early as June. Following Thursday’s consultations, Nicușor Dan officially designated him, while pointing out that there was not yet a parliamentary majority and that he had not received confirmation that the mandate had been accepted. A few minutes later, Mureșan announced that he accepted the proposal. The formation of a new government depends on securing parliamentary support and the investiture vote.
