At an event in Bucharest, Daniel Tudose, Country Manager of Ericsson Romania, and Ivan Rejon, Director of Strategy Government and Public Advocacy, Ericsson Europe, emphasized the importance of accelerating the adoption of 5G technology in Romania. They highlighted that regions investing in digital infrastructure will drive the global economy, while Europe risks losing competitiveness due to fragmentation and inefficient public policies. Although Romania is a leader in fixed connections, the national 5G coverage is only 46.8%, far below the EU average of 94.35%.
The transformations brought by 5G could add 7.6 billion euros to Romania's economy by 2040, benefiting industries such as manufacturing and logistics. Examples from other countries, such as Singapore, demonstrate the potential of 5G as the foundation of the digital economy. Ericsson representatives outlined five priorities to close Romania's 5G gap and emphasized the importance of collaboration between government, authorities, and operators to develop a more advanced and resilient digital infrastructure.
