Nicușor Dan argues that anyone who repressed during the Revolution has no place in a high position, but Pahonțu is not in this situation.

The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, stated in Chișinău that he does not consider the controversy surrounding the head of the SPP, Lucian Pahonțu, following revelations in the press, to be justified. He emphasized that he has not conducted an individual assessment of Pahonțu, but mentioned that any person involved in repressive actions should not hold high positions in the state, specifying that Pahonțu is not in this situation.

Nicușor Dan explained that the SPP "functions and is a professional service." He also clarified that the SPP is not a secret service and that Pahonțu was vetted by the CNSAS upon his appointment.

Following the information that emerged, Nicușor Dan stated that he read the article that generated the controversy, but did not find elements that justify its title. He added that he cannot prove a "negative" fact, emphasizing that the burden of proof lies with those who make accusations.

According to an investigation by Recorder, General Lucian Pahonțu, the head of the SPP, was part of the Security Troops before 1989 and was present at the Intercontinental during the repression of the demonstration on December 21, 1989. Pahonțu confirmed his presence but claimed that he did not have contact with the demonstrators.
