Nicușor Dan rejects Recorder's accusations against Lucian Pahonțu: “That article was both tendentious and unserious”

President Nicușor Dan said in an interview with Euronews that the accusations made by Recorder against Lucian Pahonțu, head of the Protection and Guard Service, had not been substantiated. The investigation claimed that the general had been part of the forces involved in suppressing protesters during the December 1989 Revolution and the June 1990 Mineriad.

The head of state described the article as “tendentious” and “unserious,” arguing that such a serious accusation must be demonstrated through facts. Nicușor Dan said he has no obligations to Pahonțu and is trying to maintain balance in his relationship with the heads of state institutions.

Recorder had previously explained that a photograph showing the president and Pahonțu alongside Members of the European Parliament, taken in Brussels in June, prompted the journalists to resume their checks and discussions with political sources.

Lucian Pahonțu has led the Protection and Guard Service for 21 years and has denied the accusations. HotNews asked the Presidential Administration for information about the checks conducted before he was proposed for the position, and the response received indicates a change in position.

In the same interview, Nicușor Dan said he would support limiting the terms of service chiefs, but warned that this measure would not solve the underlying problem: exercising genuine civilian control over the intelligence services.
