Nicușor Dan says he is “satisfied” regarding allegations about the SPP chief’s involvement in the events of 1989 and 1990

President Nicușor Dan stated, in an interview given to HotNews at the end of his visit to the United States, that he is “satisfied” regarding the allegations made against the head of the Protection and Guard Service, Lucian Pahonțu. He was accused of having participated in the suppression of the protests in December 1989, at the barricade at the InterContinental, as well as in the events of June 13–15, 1990, in University Square.

The head of state said that he had discussed the allegations presented in the Recorder investigation with Pahonțu and that, based on the information currently available, he considers the matter clarified. “Obviously, if other evidence emerges, I am ready to look at it,” Nicușor Dan stated.

The president also said that Lucian Pahonțu continues to lead a service that “functions” and that there are other issues he considers priorities, such as energy strategy and combating tax evasion.

Recorder claimed, based on documents and testimonies, that the head of the SPP may have been part of the troops sent to the barricade at the InterContinental in December 1989 and that he may also have been involved in the intervention on June 13, 1990. Nicușor Dan stated that he is willing to reassess the situation if new evidence emerges.
