The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, warned that elections during wartime could be a "tsunami" that would "fracture Ukraine".
His statements were made in the context of a controversial call from former Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, who called for elections to be held despite the Russian invasion. Zelensky emphasized that, under the martial law in effect since February 2022, elections cannot take place.
He mentioned logistical difficulties, such as voting for soldiers and refugees, and stated that organizing a vote could lead to the destruction of the country. His decision to dismiss Fedorov also generated protests, and Zelensky highlighted the importance of unity between society and the army.
