Nicuşor Dan participates in Finland at the summit dedicated to the security and development of the Arctic region

President of Romania Nicuşor Dan is attending the European Summit on the Arctic Region in Rovaniemi, Finland, on Sunday and Monday. The meeting is organised at the initiative of Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and aims to strengthen the European Union’s strategic approach to an area of growing geopolitical, economic and climate importance.

European leaders are expected to attend the summit, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. European Council President Antonio Costa and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, will also take part in the discussions.

The new aspect of Romania’s participation is the presentation of a vision for the unified management of security challenges in the area stretching between the Arctic and the Black Sea. Nicuşor Dan will argue that developments in the two regions are interconnected and will express Romania’s willingness to assume responsibilities as part of the EU and NATO’s joint efforts.

The discussions will focus on a more ambitious role for the European Union in the Arctic’s security and economic development. Romania intends to contribute through projects concerning the protection of critical infrastructure, the strengthening of defence capabilities and energy security.
