President of Romania Nicuşor Dan will attend, on September 13–14, 2026, the European Summit dedicated to the Arctic Region, organized in Rovaniemi, Finland. The meeting aims to strengthen the European Union’s strategic approach to an area of growing geopolitical, economic and climate importance.
The summit is organized at the initiative of Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and will bring together European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. European Council President António Costa and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, will also participate in the discussions.
The discussions will focus on defining a more ambitious role for the European Union in the security and economic development of the Arctic. Nicuşor Dan will present Romania’s vision for the coordinated management of security challenges in the area stretching between the Arctic and the Black Sea, which are considered interconnected.
The Presidential Administration states that Romania is prepared to contribute to the joint efforts of the EU and NATO by assuming regional responsibilities and through projects concerning the protection of critical infrastructure, defense and energy security.
