The President of China, Xi Jinping, declared on Tuesday that Beijing is ready to collaborate with Finland to support an international system centered on the UN and to promote a multipolar world. During the meeting with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Xi emphasized Finland's importance in developing relations between China and the European Union. Orpo's visit to China comes against the backdrop of international political instability and increased attention to Arctic security, in the context of recent threats from American President Donald Trump.
The Arctic is becoming an increasingly important strategic area for international trade, and Finland, having a third of its territory above the Arctic Circle, seeks a NATO agreement on security in the region. Xi invited Finnish companies to explore opportunities in the Chinese market, and Orpo expressed interest in continuing bilateral discussions. During the talks, incidents related to the deterioration of submarine infrastructure were also addressed, as well as North Korea's support for Russia in the conflict in Ukraine. Orpo reiterated the invitation for Xi to visit Finland, thus strengthening bilateral relations.
