Chinese President Xi Jinping presented a series of initiatives on Sunday at the BRICS summit in New Delhi to deepen cooperation among member states in areas such as artificial intelligence, trade and investment. The move comes as Beijing seeks to turn BRICS into a practical platform for the development of the Global South.

Xi said that the success of the “Greater BRICS Initiative” depends on creating a solid foundation for pragmatic cooperation. He called for maintaining the stability of industrial and supply chains and developing an integrated market.

China, which will assume the BRICS presidency in 2027, intends to create an “Open Source AI Zone” for the group’s members. The initiative is expected to support collaboration in developing large language models, AI training and building an open ecosystem.

Xi also proposed a partnership within the BRICS Special Economic Zone, as well as the organization next year of a trade forum dedicated to services. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that solutions developed by BRICS should also be accessible to other states in the Global South.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described BRICS as a force for a more equitable and multipolar world order. The group brings together 11 states, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
