The Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that the early legislative elections will most likely take place on October 18 or 25, 2026, thus responding to the demands of protesters who have been calling for a new vote for over a year. These elections will be held more than a year ahead of the normal deadline, scheduled for December 2027.
The protest movement in Serbia was triggered by the collapse of the roof at the train station in Novi Sad, resulting in 16 deaths, an incident that brought to light the citizens' dissatisfaction with corruption in the country. Although Vucic promised elections, he has avoided providing an exact date until now. The protest movement, led by students, has lost momentum, but they announced that they will participate in the elections with their own list.
Aleksandar Vucic, who has been in power for over a decade, mentioned that he will resign immediately after calling the elections to launch his campaign, suggesting a possible return to the position of prime minister.
