The United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced that it issued an erroneous report regarding an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 near the city of Dayton, Nevada.
A spokesperson for the USGS clarified that there was no earthquake in that area, located approximately 19.3 kilometers northeast of Carson City, the capital of Nevada, calling the incident 'a false event.' The USGS is investigating the reasons why the automatic earthquake detection system generated this alert.
Law enforcement agencies in the neighboring regions confirmed that they did not feel any tremors or signs of seismic activity. An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 would have been strong enough to cause minor damage and significant shaking.
