A 5.5 magnitude earthquake occurred on Wednesday in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 160 kilometers south of the capital of El Salvador, San Salvador, at a depth of 56.8 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The Ministry of Environment of El Salvador reported a magnitude of 5.7, but assured that there is no tsunami risk. The earthquake was also felt in Honduras and Nicaragua, causing panic among the population, but civil protection services reported no casualties or material damage.

This earthquake occurred two days after a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Colombia, which caused over 250 deaths and thousands of injuries.

Central America is an earthquake-prone area due to the tectonic activity generated by the interaction of the Caribbean and Cocos plates.
