Panama recorded more than 200 aftershocks following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that occurred on Friday, with the quake affecting hundreds of homes and infrastructure in the country’s central provinces. Following the damage, the Panamanian government declared a state of national emergency over the weekend.
The series of aftershocks continued after the main earthquake and led authorities to constantly monitor the situation in the affected areas. So far, the extent of the damage is being assessed in the central provinces, where damage to buildings and infrastructure has been reported.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake was followed by more than 200 secondary seismic movements, according to information reported by Reuters. Declaring a state of national emergency allows resources to be mobilized for response efforts, damage assessment, and support for affected communities.
Authorities continue inspections and monitoring of seismic activity, as aftershocks may cause further damage to buildings already affected by the initial earthquake.
