Shortly beforehand, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Indonesia, near Flores Island, led to the issuance of a tsunami warning for the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi. Authorities advised people to move away from beaches and seek refuge on higher ground, while the earthquake was felt across much of Flores Island, causing damage to buildings and infrastructure.
A 6.16-magnitude earthquake was recorded Sunday near the Vanuatu Islands, in the South Pacific Ocean, at a depth of 125 kilometers, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). No casualties or material damage have been reported so far.
The earthquake occurred one day after a stronger quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Saturday’s earthquake, on October 24, occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers and about 197 kilometers west-northwest of the town of Port Olry.
Following Saturday’s earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for the surrounding area, but it was later canceled. The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, including one with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3.
The depth of an earthquake influences how seismic waves are felt at the surface. Vanuatu is located in a region of intense seismic activity caused by the interaction of tectonic plates in the Pacific. The effects of Sunday’s earthquake are still being assessed.
