A 5.9 magnitude earthquake shook New Zealand's South Island on Thursday, with the epicenter located about 40 kilometers north of Te Anau, an important tourist spot.
Initially, the magnitude was estimated at 6.3, but it was later revised. The earthquake was felt strongly, causing many residents to leave buildings, but so far no casualties or significant damage have been reported.
Authorities temporarily issued a tsunami warning, which has since been lifted, but warned that strong currents and unpredictable waves may occur in coastal areas. NEMA recommended that those on vessels return to shore and await official instructions. Over 20,000 people reported feeling the earthquake, according to the GeoNet agency.
