The Dutch data protection authority has imposed a fine of 825 million euros (966 million dollars) on Uber for deactivating drivers' accounts through automated systems without properly informing them.

The decision, dated August 17, is the second largest imposed under the EU's GDPR regulation, following the 1.2 billion euro fine imposed on Meta in 2023. Uber has announced that it will appeal, considering the fine disproportionate. The authority emphasized that Uber committed serious violations by suspending accounts without human involvement, affecting drivers' earnings. The case refers to incidents in Europe between 2018 and 2022, managed by the Dutch authority due to Uber's European headquarters in the Netherlands.

Although Uber claims that the suspensions were temporary and that it did not deactivate accounts without human assessment, the agency confirmed that the system led to permanent deactivations in certain cases. The fine was calculated as a fraction of Uber's annual revenue for 2025, and the group PersonalData.IO, which supported the affected drivers, is preparing a class action for compensation.
