The European Commission imposed a record fine of 550 million euros on the AliExpress platform, part of the Alibaba group, for allowing the sale of illegal, unsafe, and counterfeit products to consumers in the European Union. This represents the largest penalty imposed under the Digital Services Act (DSA), adopted in 2022. The fine was determined based on the severity of the violations and the impact on EU users, with preliminary findings issued in June 2025. The European Commissioner for the Digital Economy, Henna Virkkunen, emphasized that AliExpress did not comply with legal obligations, and its system for detecting illegal products was ineffective. Counterfeit and unsafe products were available on the platform, and the sanctioning policy was insufficiently enforced. AliExpress must present an action plan by October 20, 2026, to address these issues.
