U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he will accept the result of the midterm elections only if the vote is “fair,” as the Republican Party risks losing its majority in Congress. The statement, made before a campaign rally in Texas, represents the latest questioning of the integrity of the vote without presenting evidence of electoral fraud.
Trump suggested he could work with Democrats if they win, but stressed that he has “strong” veto power, which he could use in negotiations with Congress. Republicans are losing ground in the polls, while Democrats are well positioned to take control of the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate.
The U.S. president has stepped up messages about alleged fraud in recent days. On Monday, he offered one million dollars for information leading to the conviction of people for electoral fraud, while on Friday he announced a preemptive appeal in the event of a Democratic victory in Alaska.
Trump has never conceded defeat in 2020, and his challenge to the result culminated in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
