President of the United States Donald Trump stated that he would work with Democrats and would use his veto power without hesitation, after partial election results indicated that the Democratic Party had taken control of Congress.
In a live broadcast for Politico, Trump did not challenge the legitimacy of the results so far. Asked how Democratic control of Congress would affect his presidency, he replied that he would be able to assess the situation “in a year”.
The president said that his administration would cooperate with Democrats whenever this was in the country’s interest, but warned that he had a “strong” veto power. “If I believe it is right, we will simply exercise the veto,” Trump said.
Earlier, on the Truth Social platform, the White House leader attributed the election results to the fact that his name had not appeared on the ballots.
Trump was also asked about Mike Johnson’s future as leader of the Republicans in the House of Representatives. The president praised his performance, saying that he “did a very good job”, but refused to officially endorse him for another term and stated that the decision belonged to his Republican colleagues.
